sol25 Capturing Joy

Yesterday, today, tomorrow,
Late summer celebrations
Fill social media, records of
Happy moments amidst real,
Diverse, busy, complicated lives.
Hikes, waves, reunions,
Piles of seafood,
Birthdays, anniversaries,
Embracing, capturing joy
As school looms on the horizon,
As the daylight hours dwindle.

In the "olden days" we waited
Until the shortest day to
See images of loved one's lives!
In the olden days, there were
holiday letters
Remember them?

Anita, what a truth you wrote about here. I guess I hadn't even thought about the demise of the holiday letter. (Though I still write them some years.) Fascinating to think about all the news that we used to learn of only once a year. Now our feeds are full of news. I love how you formatted the first stanza, with a long list of" captured joys." I also like how you used "late summer", "as the daylight hours dwindle" and "the shortest day" to help us see the calendar of sharing in a new way.

Anita, while I miss those holiday letters and all the joy arriving at once in the mail. I also love the new way of keeping up with people on social media, especially people that I would have never otherwise connected with. This brings a smile to see all of the memories from your summer and how you used that to create this poem. You have had a fun break, and what a gift it is that you shared it with us!

Anita,
Like you, I enjoy seeing those celebratory social media posts, and as Kim and Denise know, I write holiday letters and real letters and postcards, although I’ve been lazy about that this year. I’m gonna rectify that this next week.
