We might be considered to be among the "lucky ones" as we've been "slicing" together for a long time; however, tolerance, tenacity trust, and love are more worthy of celebration than luck as we reach another anniversary!
There will be
No dinner out,
No gifts, no dancing.
I had no idea
How hard, how wonderful,
How challenging, how rewarding,
How mad, how happy,
How difficult, how beautiful,
How selfless, how fulfilling,
How giving, how forgiving,
How angry, how good
Living, sharing, balancing each other
Would be.
I'll stick around,
How hard, how wonderful,
How challenging, how rewarding,
How mad, how happy,
How difficult, how beautiful,
How selfless, how fulfilling,
How giving, how forgiving,
How angry, how good
Living, sharing, balancing each other
Would be.
I'll stick around,
For companionship,
For feuds, fun,
For times to go separate ways,
For times together,
For hikes, hopes, harvests,
For planned-left-overs,
To give, to forgive,
To cancel each other's votes,
To augment each other's lives,
In a relationship
Where neither is perfect,
Where both are tenacious.
For feuds, fun,
For times to go separate ways,
For times together,
For hikes, hopes, harvests,
For planned-left-overs,
To give, to forgive,
To cancel each other's votes,
To augment each other's lives,
In a relationship
Where neither is perfect,
Where both are tenacious.

What a wonderful post, full of wisdom and wit and affection.
I love your lines:
"Of tolerance, tenacity, trust,
And love" and appreciate that tenacity (stick-to-it-ness) is part of the fabric of relationships.
Kevin
PS - I am stopping by here as part of my #nerdlution goal of leaving 50 comments on 50 blogs over 50 days. But you know, I read you regularly anyway. It was like coming into an old friend's house and reading poetry on the wall.
Congratulations! These lines really stand out for me:
"In a relationship
Where neither is perfect,
Where both are tenacious."
You know this;no wonder you have been together for a long time!
I just love it --words we all need to hear and remember about all relationships. Thank you --you touch my heart and opened my mind.
Clare
Your words are beautiful - tolerance, tenacity, trust. I've been married a long time, too and could find much of my relationship in your words. Thank you!
To augment each other's lives, such beautiful wisdom. I have been married a long time also and was very touched by this reflection on why long term relationships last.

What a lovely tribute to marriage! I'm only in year 5, but I already think I know that you're so right - so full of joy and love and work and compromise already! Happy Anniversary!!
Happy Anniversary!
Your writing encapsulates what it takes to make a marriage work.
There will be quiet
Recognition, remembering
Of the many days ...
Yes, that's what it all comes down to, really. None of us know that marriage is hard work and imperfect when we set out, but the moment we realize the truth of that, and the moment we decide to go on any way, and with a joyful, hopeful heart, there is recognition and remembrance and celebration. I hope you celebrate, Anita ...congratulations!
How very special for you to write and capture some of the feelings on your anniversary. Wow-I congratulate you and your husband, & wish you many more years together, Anita.
I have read your poem multiple times now and it just keeps on touching my heart. Each and every word is so significant in a relationship. From someone who has been in a relationship for only a few years now, I thank you for these amazing words and heartfelt poem.

Perfect words: tolerance, trust, tenacity. Congratulations! That is wonderful. We are close to our 30 year and in some ways it seems like just yesterday. While there are tough moments, it is good to have someone with you. Thanks for sharing a little part of your many years of slicing.
