#Slice of Life 2013 #23 of 31 The Nice Little House

In one assessment of beginning reading, a house fills with animals as the storyline repeats, "The ...(fill in animal) went into the little house."  Then, the skunk does "what skunks do" and the animals leave.  The skunk, sarcastically says, "What a nice little house!"  After reading the story, the teacher asks the question, "At the end of the story, why did the skunk say this is a nice little house!"  Believe me, there are many ways to say "made a skunk smell!"

The other day, a first grader responded, "Somebody probably read him the title."  I must have looked a bit perplexed, so my student continued, "Just like you read it to me!"  It took me a second to recover from the clearly accurate and totally literal response, but my student was on top of the situation and proudly, without missing a beat, took control of the assessment situation and pointing to the title of the book and proudly reading, "See, it says right here on the cover, The Nice Little House."

The skunk's sarcasim was lost to my first grader but her confidence made my day.  It indeed said, "The Nice Little House" and I should not have asked such a silly question.

Silly teacher! Really, don't you think this student deserves a pretty good score on that answer? I'm sure the test creators don't.

Someone should publish a book of quotes from young elementary students and that line should be in there. Great share--thanks!

Of course, the answer is correct. If only the skunks had readers like you, Anita! It's interesting to think of all the possible answers to a question; I wonder why the test creators think there is only one?

Out of the mouths of babes....our children can teach us so much. We need to stop and watch the world from their eyes...maybe there would be fewer problems. Sigh....loved this...it made my day. Jackie http://familytrove.blogspot.com/

Her confident answer made me smile. I love that kids are not afraid to give an answer even if it's not the expected one. Too bad those scorers of standardized tests are only looking for the standard answer. They miss out on so much.

I always enjoy it when my kindergarten kiddos get to read this book. It's my favorite one for getting interesting answers to questions. You just never know what they will say, do you?

Funny! Reminds me of a student who answered the question, "Where do pork chops come from?" with a roll of her eyes and a very emphatic, "Up-town." Wish I could capture her south Gergia accent in writing. (I was a teacher aide reading a script, and looking back, I have no idea why that question was being asked on a reading assessment!)
