This month I am writing with the Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Community. In case you were wondering, this is the second of three Fridays on the 13th in 2026. (the last one is in November).
In my defense, it was cold in the space they ask you to wait for those pesky scans looking inside of the recess of your body where nobody should brave to go. Plus, they give you a robe sized for fashion models washed 3650 times.
Then you wait and the screaming monkeys reach their own crescendo inside your head. I was worrying about: my children their children, my students, former students, their students, the weather, time......as I wound myself tighter than a cuckoo clock. UNTIL, the technician, turned my raging train of thought into a puddle of laughter with, "Aren't you glad you are getting this done today, rather than on Friday, the 13th?" I had to agree with that!

I forgot that today is Friday the 13th. Hmmm. The description of the robe is the perfect detail to say a lot about the experience without saying much. Good to get those scans and hope they're all clear.
How well you describe this experience. This could be a model of strong writing! My favorite line..."screaming monkeys reach their own crescendo". I'll remember that when my own monkeys get out of control. Very clever and funnyi!
You wrote about something no one enjoys but need to go through with humor. Loved the laugh at the end. arjeha
You are so right about that robe! What's with that? I also have screaming monkeys - almost constantly all day long! You allowed me to turn them off with laughter. Thank you!
OOOhhh, I hate those robes. Especially the ones made of paper, disposable, with a piece of plastic that is supposed to be a belt that ties, but mine is usually enough to knot only, depending on what I've eaten. Hope all went well with the scans - it's a relief to get past it and feel the weight lifted.
Anita, the way you describe the anxiety and fear - those "screaming monkeys" - perfectly captures what happens when thoughts get out of control.
And the robe. Oh, I've been there. Clearly your imagery connects with readers like me and the other commenters I see here. Well done...and good luck with those scans!
