This month, I am writing with the Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Community. I will be wearing green on this St Patrick's Day in honor of that part of my heritage, but this post is not about the wearing of the green and it's not really about coffee either.
We met someone on a tangential journey, flummoxed with a desire to be in two places at the same time. She threw out one of those ended questions that lingered in the air like the beans roasting nearby. The kind that don't really have an answer but bubble to the surface among friends who sense a common bond that overrides accepts, borders.
We did not solve world peace and we did not even solve our own issues; instead we laid them onto the table, respectful of the many small, middle-sized and enormous challenges, worries, concerns we each face. We were grateful for someone to listen and to help carry the load, for a moment, Coffee was just the conduit.

I sipped my coffee as I read this post, and I could picture the two friends in conversation... because that's sort of what it's like reading a slice in the morning, picking up a topic and the aroma of the day, not solving the world's problems, but at least connecting with people. -humbleswede
First, this is one of my favorite slices of yours I have read. I like it for so many reasons, like the writing style and similes: She threw out one of those ended questions that lingered in the air like the beans roasting nearby. That and the next sentence just brought me right there to the slightly uncomfortable comfort of friendship that moves in a different direction but honors the past. That "coffee was the conduit," makes me think of how we ARE so drawn to tea or coffee with a friend - old or new, likeminded or worlds apart, and we forever hold our special people in our hearts. This is a gem. Thank you!

Someone to listen! That’s the heart of it! Coffee just happens to be there.
I totally agree with Kim’s observations, above, and the lines she loves. I also love this line: “ respectful of the many small, middle-sized and enormous challenges, worries, concerns we each face. ” that is part of friendship, right, the little worries, middle, and then the big ones when we need a friend to hear them. This is a lovely post. Makes me want to invite a friend for coffee today!
Sometimes you don't need to have problems solved. You just need someone to listen. That is the definition of a true friend. arjeha
Anita, you captured the power of coffee and conversation perfectly. I love those times with friends. Connection is so important!
